Abstract:
The purpose of the study was to examine the perceptions of student success inclassrooms taught by teachers who were athletic coaches compared to classrooms taughtby teachers who were not athletic coaches. The second purpose of this study was toexamine the extent to which coaches were perceived as creating a positive learningenvironment for all students to experience success. The measure of student success wasassessed by insights through a survey designed for administrators, teachers, coaches, andstudents.This was a quantitative design using survey research. Administrators, teachers,coaches, and students were surveyed. The sample was limited to a single high school asall participants were selected by convenience. The instrumentation utilized to measurethe perceptions of student success and positive learning environment was a surveydesigned for the four sample groups (administrators, teachers, coaches, and students).The survey was developed based on Charlotte Danielson’s (2007) framework forteaching.Overall, the perceptions of creating a positive learning environment did not differfor teachers and coaches. However, there were group differences in the perceptions ofcreating a positive learning environment for coaches but not for teachers; the perceptionsof promoting student success in the classroom did differ for teachers and coaches;specifically, there were group differences in the perceptions of promoting student successin the classroom for coaches but not for teachers; the perceptions of teachers and coachescreating a positive learning environment did not differ overall, but did for promotingstudent success.
